Anthony Jamari Thomas
Anthony Jamari Thomas (He/Him) is a Jamaican-American director, born and raised in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Anthony studied performing arts and literature before landing in fashion, working for luxury brands Gucci and Commes des Garcons and creating media for New York-based brands Who Decides War, Theophilio and Carter Young.
Anthony’s work draws on Black spirituality, identity, and the satire of primetime sitcoms he grew up on. Through hyper-realism, portraiture and often, the exploration of Black sound, he presents the complexities within everyday life, the mundane with surreal interventions that shake it up.
At Scheme Engine, Anthony makes a stellar debut: For Jordan, Anthony wrote, directed and shot stills for the 2023’s "Streetwear Ground Game," featuring fashion maverick, Bloody Osiris. He collaborated with Spotify creatives on the sitcom-styled, three spot campaign for playlist RNB X, starring R’n’B divas Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, and Victoria Monet. With 72andSunny Anthony directed “My Cause My Cleats,” for the NFL featuring league all stars and the charities they support. Most recently, for Awake NY’s debut collaboration with the iconic Jordan brand, Anthony was invited to write and direct, ‘Where I’m From’, a love letter to Brooklyn as the birthplace of greatness, told through the eyes of its natives. Anthony was selected for Shoot Magazine's 2023 New Director's Showcase for his sketch spot for Scarr’s Pizza, “Man U Betta."
In photography, Anthony has exhibited his work at Museo Del Barrio, National Black Theatre, and Dover Street Market Los Angeles. He has released four publications: "LAMB," published by Paradigm; "Fragmented Stream of Consciousness," with Agnes B.; "Life Before," published by Adidas Skateboarding; and "Slow Collapse: One Ocean, All Lands," in collaboration with Nanamica. His work has also been featured in magazines such as Hypebeast, Highsnobiety, and Forbes Magazine.
